Introducing Reiki
Rei Ki
What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”)
is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation which promotes healing. Reiki is a very simple, yet powerful,
technique that anyone can learn. The word Reiki itself is made up of two words, Rei and Ki. Rei means the universal
guiding energy/source. Ki is the life energy which exists within all living things. So, Reiki is spiritually guided
life energy. A typical Reiki session involves a very slow progression of hand placements on or just above the clothed
body of the client. It is important to know that Reiki is not a religion. It is a meditative healing practice
and one need not believe in it for it to be effective.
Mikao Usui
Where did Reiki come from?
Though similar healing methods have been practiced
for thousands of years, this method was developed by Mikao Usui in the early 1900's. He was a man that set out on a quest
to discover how the great teachers of the past were able to heal with their
hands. After a long search he found the answer and the ability to act as a conduit
for this healing energy. It came to the West through a Japanese American woman
named Hawayo Takata who lived in Hawaii. From her students it has spread around
the globe.
What does Reiki do for you?
The first thing that people notice is a
profound sense of peace and relaxation. Reiki works holistically by treating
the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. It brings about a “relaxation
response” within the body, causing a slowing of respiration and a decrease in diastolic blood pressure.
People will often fall asleep. Reiki helps to bring us back
to our center, reminding us what it is like to be truly at peace. It is while
we are in a true state of relaxation that the body, mind and spirit can devote all of their energies to healing.
